Ok, I’ve been looking into the duplicate-post RSS feed problem, and it looks like I’m going to require more data to track the issue down.

If you see any duplicate posts in your KKCook RSS feed, it’d really help us if you could check:

  • Is the URL exactly identical for each post?
  • Is the date identical for each post?
  • What RSS reader are you using? If you view the RSS as a raw feed, does it contain duplicates?
  • What entries were duplicated?

Comment below, and we’ll try to get this sorted!

Oh, also – on LJ it only seems to happen after a break of a certain amount of time, perhaps: I didn’t get duplicate posts after Paul’s and your posts about the RSS feed.

I am challenged by all the details, but I can tell you it came through like that on Google Reader. Sorry to not be more helpful!

Hugh | 2008-11-04 12:17:15 UTC

Jehane – what were the dates and URLs on the other duplicate? In other words, if you have two instances of a post, can you list date and URL for both?

I think I know what the problem is now…

Chris | 2008-11-04 12:25:06 UTC

There was a time between From the archives: Cooking the perfect Bolognese to From the archives: The Planet vs the Palate with no duplication then until RSS feeds more duplication.

My RSS aggregator is NetNewsWire for the mac. Unsubscribing and then re-subscribing clears this problem though.

Keep it up. Oh did you buy The Big Fat Duck Cookbook yet? I boughjt mine from Amazon, 65 quid with delivery to Dublin!

@the most recent commenter – there seems to only be one copy of each post there?

@Chris – thanks! Yeah, I’ve got a copy of the Big Fat Duck Cookbook – I will be sitting down to read more of it today, in fact…

Jehane | 2008-11-04 12:45:19 UTC

Sorry, that anonymous comment was me.

Yes, there’s only one copy of each post there, because that’s what I got. When Paul posted his most recent post, all of those popped up at the same time, above everything else on my friends page. It’s not that you get most recent post, and then most recent post again, it’s that you get Most Recent Post plus last 15 posts to the blog. So it’s more of a repost than a duplication.
If that makes sense?

For me, when it happens, I get all of them again. The url sometimes contains the “www”, and sometimes doesn’t, but for the ones that I have 3 or more of, they seem to alternate between having the “www” and not having it, which I suspect is relevant to the problem. I use Mozilla Thunderbird to get my RSS feeds.

Hugh | 2008-11-04 17:17:05 UTC

@David – yeah, that’s my suspicion too. I think that the code for some reason sometimes decides to post the feed with no “www”, at which point everything gets confused.

I think I’ll hardcode the URL and see if that fixes it.

Hugh | 2008-11-05 10:01:18 UTC

Ok, I’ve made that change. Let’s see if that fixes the problem.

(I’ve also done a couple of other bugfixes.)

David | 2008-11-06 03:00:01 UTC

Well, the good news is that I no longer get all of the posts every time a new post is added. The bad news is that I don’t get the new posts either. Thunderbird says that http://www.kamikazecookery.com/blogs.rss is not a valid RSS feed.

Hugh | 2008-11-06 10:37:33 UTC

Gaah. OK, validating…
