The Hunt For A Yellow Kettle | Hugh 2006-09-15 17:05:00 UTC |
So you want an electric kettle (we’re very fond of electric kettles, and you want it in a nice bright yellow? Yellow electric kettle: no problem in this consumer-driven world of ours, right? Right? Bueller? Actually, it turns out there’s a bizarre and near-total gap in the market when it comes to kettles. You can get them in businesslike stainless steel. You can get them in cheap-as-chips white plastic. You can even get kettles in pink . But try to get a kettle in yellow and you’re in some difficulties unless you’re handy with a paintbrush. (Don’t worry, we have found one. One only, but one.) It’s not really that surprising. After all, can you get a grill pan in yellow? Do espresso machines come in anything much other than a businesslike black? It seems like colour-coordination is one of the things that is seriously lacking in modern cookware. Kitchencraft don’t do one. Le Cafetiere might do a natty pink kettle, but yellow ain’t in their repetoire. Kenwood are all about the srs business kettles in stainless steel. And Bodum don’t claim to do one, but they lie, sir, they lie like a rug. Both their “Ettore”: and “IBIS”: ranges come with what is nominally a green shade, but which looks to my trained eye rather more like yellow. Sure, it’s a greenish yellow. Very greenish. But it’s the closest you can get in this imperfect world of ours. Fortunately, since it’s the only game in town, it’s a damn good game. We’re talking World of Warcraft here, not Warhammer Online. Customers love the darn thing – apparently the lid doesn’t break, it’s incredibly quiet (see more about our failure to find a completely silent kettle – but this one’s close), the element’s concealed so you don’t have to clean it, the spout works – it’s a Damn Fine Kettle. And it’s yellow. Sort of. Enjoy! This has been a Kamikaze Cookery Infodump – short bits of useful information from the three geeks. Who cook. With Science. | |
